Paying It Forward

When we were students, we encountered demonstrations and lectures by senior glass artists from Japan and abroad. Their skill, their spirit, and the heat rising from the glass itself moved us to our core — it was their example that drew us into the world of glass.

Twenty-some years have passed. Without quite realizing it, we have reached the age our seniors were back then. As we teach at glass institutions or work in our own studios, facing the next generation day after day, a quiet conviction takes shape: it is now our turn to hand things on. The techniques, the spirit, and the wonder we once received — we want to pass them forward. Eleven artists who share this calling came together, and Glass Around 70's was born.

Joining Forces

Our demonstrations go beyond glassblowing. We bring kilnwork and coldwork into the same space, weaving together the many expressions glass can take.

But "bringing them in" is easier said than done. Glass, as a material, sets countless limits. So we combine the knowledge and craft each member brings, untangling one challenge at a time. This depth of shared expertise is GA70's greatest strength.

A New Challenge

Within the limited time of a demonstration, each of us gives everything we have to reach toward new expression. Every venue is different — the glass behaves differently, temperatures shift, the equipment changes. To do our very best with whatever is in front of us — that is our pride.

We were born in the 1970s, and more than twenty years have passed since we first faced glass. Even so — or perhaps because of it — there is one thing we can say for certain. We believe in the possibilities of glass more than anyone.
